REMEMBERING GRACIE

by Emily Scott Pottruck

In July 2013, I was the guardian of only one senior dog, Andy, as my others had passed away.

Andy was a very frail, deaf, mostly blind Yorkie and while I wanted another dog, I had to be especially careful of the new dog's nature.

I went on every rescue site I could find and even met several seniors but none seemed compatible with Andy.

I then found Toy Breed Rescue online and the minute I saw the photo of a senior Shih Tzu on their site, I knew that dog was going to be my new adoptee.

The next day I drove to San Jose to meet Gracie Ann - a 12 year old white/cream Shih Tzu. As soon as she walked through the door, I fell in love.

I put her next to Andy and she didn't budge or growl. Andy even fell into her and she wasn't bothered at all. Five minutes later, after the paperwork was completed, Gracie Ann was in my car headed home.

I changed her name to Dame Gracie as the day of her 'new birthday' was also the day Prince George was born and I am naming my dogs alphabetically.

She took to her new name and new home instantly. And for a little over three glorious years she was at home and made our home a warmer and loving place.

Andy passed away 3 months after Gracie joined us. For the three months they shared, Gracie acted as his hospice worker; she was patient, attentive, and respectful.

When Andy passed away, Gracie consoled me. When I was suddenly divorced, Gracie consoled me. She was there by my side for many teary episodes, patiently waiting for the moment to pass.

Fortunately, she and I had infinitely more happy times together. We traveled, we walked, we visited with other humans and pets. Her prancing down our neighborhood streets induced smiles from everyone in our path. She loved her doggy seat in the car and enjoyed watching the world go by.

Her appetite belied her size as did her good nature, calm demeanor, and acceptance that she was going to be adored and loved by all. She loved her routines and at the end of every day, would run to my nightstand to wait for her bedtime treat as if to say, "one last thing before we go to sleep!"

While she was nonchalant about other animals, she loved people. She would follow me or her pet sitters everywhere. She knew every shop owner and where they kept their doggy treats. She loved curling up in her bed, or next to me, or anywhere really. She was truly content to just be around people.

Her indent on my heart and on others' will live forever. She was my sweet little girl and I will be forever grateful to Loree and everyone at Toy Breed Rescue. Dame Gracie will be missed by more people for she was just that special ...

With gratitude - Emily
